Helping a Homeless Veteran with the Housing Partnership, Metro United Way, KY Habitat for Humanity and the KY Dept. of Veterans Affairs. Help a Homeless Veteran USW (United Steelworkers 1693) Joins SW Ministries in giving toys to kids for Christmas Thanks to the generosity of our members, many of the families in our community woke up to a better Christmas this morning. Parents were able to pick out toys for their kids, kids were able to pick out toys to give to their brothers and sisters as Christmas gifts. Thanks to our partners at SW Ministries for hosting the event and a special thanks to our #WOS committee for making it happen. Thanks again to all who donated and helped make this a special Christmas for these families. Boxes of Love, Union members, Businesses, and Community Come Together to Feed the Needy Check out the News Footage courtesy of Wave 3 LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The spirit of giving was on full display dark and early Friday morning, as volunteers gathered at Fourth Street Live in downtown Louisville to pack up some holiday dinners for needy families. Fourth Street Live workers teamed up with Ford UAW Local 862 and the Indiana National Guard to pack up boxes for 1,100 families. Each box cost approximately $30, so the endeavor wasn't a cheap one. "It just goes back to caring," Fourth Street Live President Ed Hartless told WAVE 3 News' Kayla Vanover early Friday. "Louisville prides themselves on being a compassionate city, and this is kind of just our way to help with that." Indiana Army National Guard Capt. Ray Riedinger said the "boxes of love" are headed to military families. "We have to watch out for our own," he said. "That's part of the mantra of the military. Traditionally it's just our soldiers that are in need. We'll take it back to our armory there in southern Indiana and distribute those out to our needy soldiers across the county." Nearly 100 volunteers helped Friday morning. UAW & Ford Raise $53,000 for Adopt-A-Child UAW/Ford is right in the middle of its annual Adopt-A-Child campaign to benefit St. Joe’s Children’s Home, and the plant has already raised over $53,000 through donations and fund-raisers like the Pappy Van Winkle drawing. Enough money was raised to get all 48 children at the home adopted and then some. Employees went shopping for toys at Meijer last weekend and then delivered the toys to St. Joe’s today. Christmas is 10 days away, and we want to provide as much as help as we can to the kids at St. Joe's. Employees still have an opportunity to donate to Adopt-A-Child through the 50/50 raffle for the UofL/UK basketball game on Dec. 21.Thanks again to UAW/Ford and the Kentucky Truck Plant for making yet another special Christmas for children in need. Teamsters 89 Union Members Raising money for 4 yr old Diagnosed with Cancer Teamsters at UPS Campbellsville have rallied around a young boy named Mason Biggers this holiday season. Mason, the four-year-old nephew of part-time UPS supervisor Laura Hedgespeth, touched many hearts at this small UPS center when a prayer group in the building, led by UPS Package Car drivers, learned he was in a battle with cancer. Mason was symbolically adopted by the center, and a large jar, dubbed “Mason’s Jar” was set up for Teamsters and Management alike to put money into. $1903 dollars have been raised so far according to Terry Daffron (pictured holding the jar in the attached photos), the package car driver who alerted his Teamsters Business Agent, James DeWeese, to this story. Acts of kindness such as this are the very heart and soul of the Teamsters union. Unions, at our core, are simply groups of hard-working men and women who come together to help lift each other up in times of need. Teamsters 89 applauds the efforts of these amazing brothers and sisters in the UPS Campbellsville center for their great act of kindness, and wish Mason a speedy recovery. Help a Union member's displaced family From Teamsters 89: "Da’Mondrial Rice, known as Buddy to his friends, is a three-hour Wing E ramp employee at UPS on the night shift. On Mondayof Thanksgiving week, while most of us were making plans for the holidays, Buddy’s mother, sister, and niece lost their home and all of their belongings to a fire. Buddy, who has been a member since 2006, is seeking assistance from his Teamsters brothers and sisters to raise $2000 to help his mother, sister, and niece start to rebuild. During this Holiday season as we reflect on what we have, we can be thankful that union members can depend on one another in. Please donate to Buddy’s family in their time of need and show them that their union is part of their family too."
